DESIGNER
LABEL?
An Overview of Burgeoning Market for
Labelling and the Products Available to do the Job
Gone are the days when purchasing label printers
was a quick decision, dictated by limited choice. Today established
printer manufacturers offer a breadth of printers, capable of
printing a variety of labels to suit a diversity of different
applications and computer environments.
Whilst labelling is not foremost on the
list when considering bringing products to market, they permeate
every walk of life and have a prominent role in the majority of
purchases made. Consider the different type of labels that we
use today: barcode, product, shelf, shipping and sprocket labels
are just a few of the more popular ones required. For these different
label types there must be printers offering corresponding abilities.
It is for these reasons that established international printer
manufacturers bring to market extensive ranges of dot matrix and
thermal label printers: to give the customer the choice and to
enable them to find exactly the right printer for their individual
needs. Label printers should be only one aspect of the printer
portfolio.
One manufacturer who has taken the customers
need for choice to heart is Star Micronics. An important consideration
in the design of all of its printers is reliability, and the company
has one of the best reputations for product longevity and fault-free
performance within the industry. High quality output and value
for money should also underpin product design as should value
added features and reasonable price/performance ratios, says the
company.
Labels are no longer simply a sticker illustrating
bald information but they should be used as a means of emphasising
a companys dedication to quality throughout all aspects
of their business; as a vehicle for branding; or a way of communicating
some information whilst retaining other data for security purposes.
Labels now have to be read by scanners and readers as well as
just by the human eye. All of these considerations have resulted
in a broad choice of high quality Star label printers.
Stars SP322 is gaining increasing popularity.
A member of the SP300 Series, one of Star Micronics most
popular product ranges the SP322 is an established low
cost, high speed matrix model which has been developed to output
primarily to sprocketted labels.
A model which proves Stars commitment
to long term performance and product reliability is the DP8340:
a printer used for receipts and mobile printing as well as for
record applications, this printer also outputs sprocket labels
and has been available for more than 15 years. Of Stars
thermal POS range, the TSP400 is utilised most frequently in labelling
applications. Its versatility enables output of shipping labels,
shelf and product labels and increasingly, barcode labels. Of
significant importance in this latter area is the TSP400s
ability to print a variety of resident barcodes, as well as offering
the option to print the highly complex PDF417 two-dimensional
barcode, capable of coding up to 1024 characters.
All in all, a label can be designed to promote
or illustrate whatever you want: it is only the printer that dictates
the parameters. The choice is yours.
